The power delivery can be a little jerky when the engine fires up to to help boost acceleration (feeling a little like a rough gear shift), but the Austral’s ability to drive in electric mode for the majority of the time means progress is otherwise smooth.

Engine noise is subdued, with a distant three-cylinder thrum that never becomes too vocal and is far quieter than the unit in the Renault Arkana and the Renault Captur. There’s a bit of suspension thump at low speeds – as there is in the Seat Ateca and the Skoda Karoq. Most noticeable is the level of wind noise by the windscreen pillars, along with some road noise on the 20in tyres.

Entry-level Techno trim, which comes with smaller 19in wheels, will be worth considering for a more comfortable ride.Īt a cruise, the Austral isn’t as quiet as the Sportage. The suspension cushioned hard impacts well, but occupants were subtly moved around their seats. The ride was rather firm and it struggled to settle down at most speeds, but it wasn't too harsh over bumps.
